4WD Transmissions, Differentials and Transfer Cases

REPAIRS AND REBUILDS FOR DIFFERENTIALS AND TRANSFER CASES (4WD)

Repairs and Rebuilds for Differentials

The differential is an essential part of your car. Without it, turning corners in your vehicle would be difficult.  The differential gives the wheels of your car or truck the capability to turn at different rates. Because the inside wheel travels a shorter distance when a car turns, the car needs a differential.

All vehicles have differentials of some kind. In front wheel drive vehicles the differential is in the front and called a transaxle. In rear-wheel drive vehicles, the differential is in the back. Four wheel drive vehicles have differentials in both the front and back.

Because all the power of the engine is transferred through the various differentials, you can imagine that they are very strong and are built to last a long time. That's why it's important to keep your differential properly lubricated. Differential fluid cools and protects the gears.

If you bring your differential for a service or repair, we will check the fluid levels. With low fluid, the differential will run too hot and wear prematurely and should be replaced with fresh fluid to extend its life.

If you are interested in repairs or rebuilds for your differential, Contact Us or drop in to The Gearbox Factory and have a talk with us, we're happy to help.

If you notice a strange noise from your axle area then this is one of the first warning signs that your differential may be wearing out/failing. When the differential shows signs of failing, it's important to repair it as soon as possible. Failure to do so can result in a relatively minor repair, becoming major and even dangerous. If you leave it too long and it freezes up when you're driving you could lose control of your vehicle and other parts like the axle, driveshaft and transmission could be damaged.

Along with the engine the differential is very particular about its oil quality and condition. Here at The Gearbox Factory you can be sure your differential will be treated with utmost care and the highest quality oil will be applied.

We will also inspect the u-joints which connect your drive shaft to the differential and may recommend service. Some u-joints can be lubricated as part of a routine service.

Repairs and Rebuilds for Transfer Cases (4WD’s)

4×4 transfer cases can vary depending on your car’s make and model. Transfer cases and drive shafts in Nissans will be different from the ones inside a Ford for example. This can make the repairs and replacement tricky since the same procedures might not always take place.

The transfer case takes power from the transmission and splits it between output shafts that connect to the front and rear driveshafts. The transfer case is what makes all wheel drive work.

Transfer cases are either gear driven or chain driven, but most of the transfer cases made today are chain driven because they are quieter and lighter.

As a general rule, make sure to ask your transfer case fluid level is checked every time that you get an oil change.

There is some tell-tale signs of a faulty transfer case so if you’re suspicious then check for the following:

  • Strange noises occurring when driving at certain speeds or when shifting gears.
  • Unusual noises coming from the front of your car in colder weather can mean you need more lubrication. (Transfer case fluid should be checked every time you get an oil change.)
  • Difficulty shifting gears or it kicks out of gear at random while in motion.
If you are concerned with a possible transfer case issue the best thing to do is contact us and arrange for an inspection at your convenience to prevent possible further damage.
