Manual Gearbox Servicing

Your manual gearbox contains oil that is designed to lubricate parts and transfer heat away from the working components.  There are no filters or cooling systems in a gearbox so it is important to change the oil at the recommended intervals to remove contamination and replace the ‘worn out’ oil.

Severe damage or premature wear will occur if you do not use quality oils of the correct viscosity and type.  Viscosity is a measure of how thick (high viscosity) or how thin (low viscosity) oil is.  There are many types of gearbox oils – all suited to particular applications and gearbox types.

Many gearbox failures are preventable.  History shows that worn shift lever bushes, clutches and incorrect oil are responsible for a significant number of failures, as well as oil leaks.  Regular servicing by professionals can mean these small problems are identified before they become a major expense.

Modern manual gearboxes often have compound synchro rings, i.e. two or three piece, which makes it even more important that the correct grade of oil is used.

We carry a full range of mineral based and synthetic oils of various viscosities and will have a correct match for your vehicle.

Manual Clutch Servicing

A good indication of correct clutch operation is in the pedal feel.  It should feel smooth and start to engage the clutch, about an inch from the floor.  If you are finding that it is sluggish or slow to engage, then it is time to come in and see us as soon as possible.

Apart from ensuring the hydraulic and mechanical clutch actuating system is operating correctly, there is no servicing to be done on the clutch.

TIPS FOR MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS AND CLUTCHES:

Noise
Typical noises are due to bearing failure or gear teeth wear.  Have the gearbox seen to urgently as it could mean the different between a set of new bearings to fix the issue, or a complete rebuild of the gearbox, if left unattended.

Difficulty changing gears
The synchro rings are typically made of a soft material (i.e. brass) and so wear out quicker than the gears.  As these rings wear out the gears become harder to shift.  A crunching sound is a sure sign the rings have failed and is now damaging the gear cluster.  An incorrect oil grade or worn clutch can also cause a similar symptom.

Worn clutch
This will show up as poor clutch pedal action or slipping when the power is applied.  An otherwise good gearbox can quickly be damaged if driven about with a worn clutch turning a clutch replacement into a full gearbox rebuild.
Avoid driving with your foot resting on the clutch pedal as this will accelerate wear on the clutch
cover and bearing
